Week in the Life of a Community College Dance Teacher: Week 2

Getting Things Together

A week in the life of a community college dance instructor: Getting Things Together
Me (Leslie Johnson) January 1997

·      Monday, August 1, 2016

Didn’t really do a whole lot today on the getting ready for school to start front. I did brainstorm some ideas for my teacher planner, and looked at some YouTube videos about creating a teacher planner. The problem is that most of those videos are for elementary teachers or homeschooling moms. While I’m not devaluing these by any estimation, they are not what I need. And I feel like the teacher planning community and business is geared towards female elementary teachers. I feel like what you can buy at office and school supply stores is very plain and nondescript. While this may suit some teachers, it does not suit me.

Therefore, I have been brainstorming different ways I can have an organized teacher planner that is decorative, suits my personality, and is still appropriate for the classes I teach. I will definitely share my teacher planner once I have it all worked out 😃

·      Tuesday, August 2, 2016

Worked some more on my teacher planner. I am using things I already have, so this will be a very patchwork planner, at least for the fall semester.

This afternoon, I worked on some bare combinations for my ballet class. I am really excited about this upcoming semester. I have a whole new approach to ballet class I want to try. I am hoping this new approach will help prepare our dancers for moving on to a four year institution better.

I also worked on some modern and jazz combinations as well.

Spent the day dealing with a car that wouldn’t start and doing laundry. Didn’t get anything done home the back to school front.

·      Thursday, August 4, 2016

Had to have my car towed to my mechanic to get it fixed. Therefore, I was kinda stuck at home most of the day.

I tried to use my time wisely and get some work done. I picked up some plain manila dividers at the grocery store yesterday that I want to use for dividing my different curriculums in my planner. I got them out several times, but just wasn’t feeling inspired to create anything. I guess I’m really just waiting to see what classes I’ll be teaching before committing.

On a side note – All that was wrong with my car was a loose battery cable. My awesome mechanics at Terry Road Tire and Alignment fixed the problem at no charge to me! They were amazing! #notsponsered

·      Friday, August 5, 2016

Did laundry this morning and was home by lunch.

After lunch, I played with my daughter, and then got ready for my sister to come over for dinner. She came about 3:00 and we got to hang out and catch up. My daughter loves when she comes over for a visit. We had hamburgers and homemade potato logs for dinner. After dinner, we totally tuned in for the Olympic Opening Ceremony.

I have to say, I was kind of disappointed in the Opening Ceremony. Just wasn’t what I was expecting.

·      Saturday, August 6, 2016

We had swim lessons this morning. Bumblebee, my daughter (or at least what I call her online), loves her swim lessons. She’s been taking swim lessons since she was about 10 months old (she’s now 2 years old!). She is doing so well. This will be the last session we have to get in the pool with her. Starting on Aug. 27, she will be in the pool with just the instructor. I think she’s way more ready than I am!

Worked on my YouTube channel this afternoon. Got my Plan With Me video filmed and edited. Working on exporting, uploading and scheduling now.

·      Sunday, August 7, 2016

Woke up at 6:00 am and realized I hadn’t uploaded my video to YouTube! I hurriedly uploaded it to see if I could make my scheduled 8am video, but, alas, YouTube decided to be slow. It was 9am before it was published. Oh, well…

While it was uploading, I managed to get in a quick workout, plank challenge, #adorethecore challenge and some stretching. Did I mention YouTube was being slow? Haha… at least I got in my workout. Also made an awesome breakfast of homemade biscuits and sausage patties.

Been enjoying the day with my family, and the night off from rehearsal. About to get dinner started and then gonna at and watch some Olympic diving, gymnastics and swimming.

Hope y’all enjoyed this installment of A Week in the Life of a Community Dance Instructor. Please let me know you thoughts on this series or if you have any questions or requests.

Have a beautiful day!

A Week in the Life of a Community College Dance Instructor: Week 1

Trying To Get Things Scheduled

So, I’ve decided to begin a new series for my blog, A Week in the Life of a Community College Dance Instructor (working title). Basically, I will be writing about my week.

I know I haven’t posted anything in a long while. Okay, a really long while. I fell into a funk with writing, got into posting content on YouTube, and just plan had no inspiration or motivation to write. However, something occurred over the last week, which I’ll tell you about in just a bit *wink* *wink*, that got me to thinking, I wonder if anyone else has ever dealt with this kinda thing before?. Or maybe someone would just be interested in what goes on during a week in the life of a community college dance instructor.

Anyway… I was listening to a podcast by Kirsten Thompson. She was talking about having writers block and how to overcome it. One suggestion was to write about what you’re passionate about. Well… I’m passionate about dance and teaching, thus, this series was born. I hope you enjoy it, and please remember to leave me a comment down below and let me know if you do 😉

Ok, so… on Monday, my director texted me and told me to call the principal at a local elementary school so we could schedule the dance classes for the coming academic year. It was about mid-afternoon, and I had a lot of errands to run, and I knew I wouldn’t be able to call him Monday, so I made plans to call first thing Tuesday morning. Which I did. Bright and early at 8:06 am. I got, “He’s in a meeting right now. If you give me your name and number I’ll have him call you back.” So, I left my name and number, thinking I’d be getting a call back that day.

Nope! Nothing. Nada. Zip. Zero. Zilch!

I decided to wait and see if he called me on Wednesday, seeing as it’s the beginning of the new school year, and he has a lot going on right now. Nothing on Wednesday either.

Thursday morning, I called back. I got the same run around about him being in meetings all day and having interviews and whatnot. I’m 100% certain all that is true. However, this is important, too, and needs his attention. I informed the secretary it wouldn’t take long, and if he could spare 10-15 minutes, we could be done. She said she’d tell him. My director even texted later that day to ask if I had called yet. I told her all that had occurred. She said she’d try calling too.

Well… it’s now Sunday afternoon, and he still hasn’t called me back. I guess I will be back on the phone tomorrow morning trying to get these classes scheduled.

On a batter note, I have been hard at work getting my combinations for my classes together. I have an idea for how I want to organize my teacher notebook to house everything I need for all my classes. I will be doing a video on that soon. I have also been working on choreography for the company, as well as combinations for classes that can be used in choreography when the time comes.

Y’all, I am truly excited about this new academic year. We have an awesome season of performances planned, and I can’t wait to get started, though I could use another month of summer vacation 😉

Have a beautiful day!

DIY Sugar Face Scrub

This DIY sugar face scrub makes a single application, so no trying to find a container in which to put the excess. I love how "scrubby" this recipe is, as it uses both brown sugar and sea salt.

DIY Sugar Face Scrub

1 teaspoon coconut oil
1/2 teaspoon brown sugar
1/4 teaspoon sea salt

Mix all ingredients together in a small bowl. Apply to face in a circular motion, massaging into skin for one minute. Rinse with warm water.

Losing the Last of the Pregnancy Weight: Week Three

I know! I know! I'm late again... All I can say is -- LIFE! Yep. Life happened. Anyway, on to this week's update.

http://www.pegasusdancing.blogspot.com/2015/09/losing-last-of-pregnancy-weight-week-three.html

After much thought and deliberation, I've decided to only post an updated picture at the beginning of each month. There isn't much change physically that one can see right now, so I'll wait until October 5 to post an updated photo. At the end of the series, I will post my before and after pics.

Here's my stats for the week:

Weight: 149lbs
Waist: 35.5 inches
Hips: 38.5 inches
Upper Arm: 11.5 inches
Thigh: 23.5 inches

Woohoo! I can't believe there's loss almost all around. Totally excited about that. Okay, here's the breakdown. I'm down .4 pounds from last week. Not a lot, but I'll take it. I stayed the same in the waist, but that's ok. At least it's not a gain. I'm down 1/2 an inch in both the upper arm and thigh. That's awesome.

For my workout, I did the POPsugar 15 Minute Core Workout to Transform Your Body. It's fan-freakin-tastic! Love it. You get strength training and cardio in one workout! Score! Also, I stuck pretty closely to my eating only between 8am and 8pm. I can't recall eating outside that time frame. I think I'm going to start journaling my food intake. It'll help me better track how I'm eating.

So.... this week. I haven't really exercised. My daughter is cutting her first molars (a.k.a. premolars) and sleep in a rare commodity right now. I have in my planner to exercise tomorrow morning before I go to work. I also have rehearsal tomorrow, so I'll get a work out there as well. I will say, I am proud of myself. I taught my ballet class Monday in my pointe shoes. I totally need to wear them every day. I'd love to get back the strength I had when I was dancing all the time. I know I can get there, I just need to do it.

Losing the Last of the Pregnancy Weight: Week Two

I know this is posting late, and I apologize. My 15 month old has been having tummy problems. This is also the reason there is no update picture of me this week.  I will get back on track next week.

Losing the Last of the Pregnancy Weight: Week Two

This past week has been very interesting. I started the week with all the commitment in the world. I was going to exercise and eat better. Well... things didn't happen exactly as I planned for them to go. But that's ok. I'm not going to beat myself up about it. I started this week off well.

Last week, I did stick to the only eating between 8am and 8pm, for the most part. On Sunday, I did have a snack when I got home from rehearsal, but I was starving. I did exercise, just mot as much as I wanted to do so. I was able to do my yoga sun salutation twice last week, but I wasn't able to get my Pilate in at all.

Here are my stats for this week.

Week Two:
Weight: 149.4lbs
Waist: 35.5 inches
Hips: 39 inches
Upper Arm: 12 inches
Thigh: 24 inches

Ok, so... I lost 2.6lbs, 1 inch in the waist, 1.25 inches in the hips, and nothing in the upper arm or thigh (which I expected).

This week, I've been sticking to my 8am to 8pm eating schedule. I also did the POPsugar 15 minute Core Workout to Transform Your Body on Monday. Fantastic workout. Really, it works your whole body, concentrating on the core. I plan to do this workout again on Wednesday.

*Disclaimer: I am not a medical professional. I am doing this purely for my own health and well-being. I do encourage everyone to speak with their health care professional if they are wanting to lose weight or be healthier.

Enjoy life with faith, love, and joy!

My First Haul

On Monday, my mom, sister, aunt and I went to The Dollar Tree and Walgreen, and I'd like to share my first haul with you.

My First Haul

We first went to lunch and then hit the stores. I wanted to go to The Dollar Tree because I need olives, and The Dollar Tree is the only place I've been able to find the pitted unstuffed green olives. Unfortunately they didn't have my olives, but I did get a bunch of other great stuff! Here I'll share the beauty/makeup related items I got.

My First Haul

  1. 6-piece Eco Tools brush set with makeup bag. This set includes a blush brush, concealer brush, eye shadow brush, smudger, angled liner, and a brow and lash tool. The makeup bag has a cute leaf pattern on the inside of the zipper pouch. It also has a snap close pocket on the back for your brushes. I purchased these at Walgreens.
  2. Studio 35 Beauty 5-piece brush set. This set includes a blush brush, foundation/concealer brush, fluffy brush, flush brush, and liner. I love the closer pattern on the handles. Just beautiful. And they are so soft! I purchased these at Walgreens.
  3. e.l.f. foundation brushes. I got two e.l.f. foundation brushes. One I use for foundation. The other one I'm going to use for face masks. Can't believe I found these at The Dollar Tree!
  4. Wet N' Wild eye shadow in bruleé. I needed a matte neutral for highlight. I already have the L'Oreal infallible in iced latte, but t's a shimmery shade and I wanted a matte shadow. Couldn't resist picking it up when I spotted it at The Dollar Tree.
  5. Wet N' Wild eye liner in black. I needed a new black eye liner. I saw this one at The Dollar Tree and couldn't resist.
  6. Wet N' Wild lip liner I willow. Spotted his next to the eye liner at The Dollar Tree and decided to pick it up. I needed a neutral lip liner.
  7. L.A. colors eye shadow palette in orchid. Spotted this at he Dollar Tree and picked it up. I liked the neutral/pink colors in this palette. Thought hey would be good colors to transition from summer to fall. They will also work for performances. And I have a lot of those coming up.
  8. L.A. colors lipstick and lip liner combos. I saw these at The Dollar Tree and though the were neat. I got two colors: twinkle and natural.

I shared my complete haul on my YouTube channel.

Enjoy life with faith, love, and joy!

Have you hauled anything lately?

My Favorite Blogs

I don't read very many blogs on a regular basis. In fact, there are very few I read on a daily basis. Here, I've complied a list of my favorite blogs. Some I read every day, some I read sporadically throughout the week, and some I read once a week. I hope you find something you enjoy.

My Favorite Blogs

  1. Sweet Tea and Saving Grace. Kirsten is one of my favorite bloggers. I read her blog every time she posts. I love the way she writes. She is so funny and down-to-Earth. I have learned so very much from her over the last few months. Kirsten blogs about DIY, blogging, email marketing, recipes, etc. She also hosts several Facebook groups, has a YouTube channel, is on Periscope, and coaches people on email marketing. She's absolutely fantastic!
  2. Pretty Neat Living. Here's another of my absolute favorites. I actually began reading Jennifer's blog after I subscribed to her YouTube channel: Pretty Neat Living. Jennifer is so sweet, I just love her. Jennifer blogs about organization, beauty, and, most recently, her pregnancy. Jennifer is just delightful.
  3. Sally's Baking Addiction. Sally shares wonderful recipes on her food blog. Her baking recipes are some of my favorites. She has a wonderful Baking 101 series she's been doing that is so very informative. Sally is also a wonderful photographer.
  4. Embracing a Simpler Life. Katie is so very sweet, and her faith shines through in each of her posts. I usually binge on her blog at the end of the week. Reading all of her posts on Saturday evening. Katie blogs about living a simple life. I just love some of her ideas for simplifying routines.
  5. Just a Girl and Her Blog. Abby is wonderful! She blogs about organization and blogging. She is very informative. If you sign up for her newsletter, she sends you all sorts of freebies go help with organization and blogging.
  6. The Humbled Homemaker. I have to admit I haven't been reading this one much lately, but I do enjoy following Erin on Instagram. Erin blogs mostly about being a homemaker and healthy living. There are several food allergies within her family, and she blogs about how they cope with those allergies.
  7. The Only Hope I've Got. I read this one sporadically. Kayse is a beautiful writer. I love her posts on marriage and family.
  8. Paper Plates and Crystal. This is a delightful little weekly blog written by my friend Kathy. She writes about tablescapes and party planning. I just love her creativity and Southern flair.
  9. Art and Faith Matters. Lynn is a wonderful writer, teacher and preacher. In her weekly blog she looks and different religious art and writes about them. Her insights are beautifully represented.
I hope you were able to find something you enjoy on this list. My tastes are eclectic, and I tend to read what I like. One great thing about blogs, if you don't like the subject for that day's post, you don't have to read it.

Enjoy life with faith, love, and joy?

Losing the Last of the Pregnancy Weight: Week One

Losing the Last of the Pregnancy Weight: Week One

Today I've decided to start a new series dedicated to losing the last of my pregnancy weight. With my daughter getting ready to turn 15 months on the 16th, and me being stick right around 150lbs, it's time to get serious about getting rid of this pregnancy weight.

I guess it's taken me so long because I kept excusing myself for not getting back into exercising. First, it was because I'd just had a baby by C-section and was recovering from all that. Then it was because my doctor told me to take it easy. I used this as an excuse not to work out at all and to take it easy once I returned to dancing and teaching dance. Then, it just became habit to not do much at all.

However, back in the spring, I started dancing more, and I noticed the weight started to come off. I was down to about 147lbs, and was excited. I thought, surely I'll be back to my pre-pregnancy (or close to it) weight before classes resumed in the fall. What I neglected to consider was, even though I was dancing over the summer, it wasn't as often as during the school year. Therefore, I needed to do some things at home. Which I didn't do. And the weight crept back on.

By the time classes resumed in the middle of August, I had gone back up to 154lbs! I couldn't believe I had put that much weight back on. It totally depressed me, but I knew I needed to do something. I stopped using my C-section as an excuse to not do things. I started learning all the choreography taught during rehearsals, and going full out each and every time. When I left  rehearsals, I was sweaty!

Over the last few weeks, I've noticed how the weight is beginning to fall off again, but I'm fluctuating from day to day. I know I need to get back into the habit of exercising at home, and I need to eat better. I have been really trying to only eat between 8am and 8pm. I haven't stuck to this as well as I should. However, today I am dedicating to sticking to only eating between 8am and 8pm. No more late night snacking because I'm bored!

For this week, Week One, I am going to add my Yoga flow and Pilate abs series three times this week. Because of my schedule, I will be adding these to Monday (today), Wednesday and Sunday. I know that seems weird, but those days work best for me at the moment.

Not only do I want to lose weight and feel better, I also want to build muscle and feel stronger. I by no means want to "get ripped" or anything crazy like that. I just want to feel better about myself and feel healthier and stronger.

Losing the Last of the Pregnancy Weight: Week One

Every Monday, I will be checking in with y'all. I will be sharing how well I did with my exercise that week as well as my stats for that week.

Week One:
Weight: 152lbs
Waist: 36.5 inches
Hips: 40.25 inches
Upper arm: 12 inches
Thigh: 24 inches

I won't be doing my bust as I am still breastfeeding. Some of these measurements are purely for curiosity's sake. However, I do believe they are great ways to measure progress, as long as you keep in mind that things will fluctuate, and muscle is more dense than fat.

*Disclaimer: I am not a medical professional. I am doing this purely for my own health and well-being. I do encourage everyone to speak with their health care professional if they are wanting to lose weight or be healthier.

Enjoy life with faith, love, and joy!

What are some things you've done, or want to do, to lose weight or get healthy?

Our Wedding Story

I have to admit, our wedding story is an interesting one. One that could only involve my husband and me.

Our Wedding Story

To begin, my husband had fallen at work the Friday before our wedding and torn up his knee. He was on a knee immobilizer and on crutches. That's right, the groom was on crutches. Now, if anyone has ever torn their knee up, you know they pit you on some pretty hefty pain killers. 'Nuff said.

Our Wedding Story

Ok, so... we arrive at the church and are met at the door by my father. He informs us that the reverend who is supposed to perform the ceremony, has locked herself in the bathroom! Yes, you heard me right, she Locked. Herself. In. The. Bathroom!

First of all, our regular minister had a medical emergency and was not able to be there. Luckily our church has several members who are ordained ministers, and one was able to step in. She wasn't familiar with the fact that the door to the minister's bathroom was broken. When she shut the door so she could get ready, the lock got stuck. Luckily we also have several members who are great problem solvers. They unpinned the hinges and got her out.

And now we were finally ready for the ceremony. My dad walked me down the aisle. And there was my soon-to-be husband, heavily leaning on his crutches.

Once I got down the aisle to him, I could tell he was feeling his knee. I was worried about him, but he smiled at me, and mouthed "I love you". The ceremony began...

Our Wedding Day

Things were going great, until we got to our vows. I could tell by looking at Hubby he was definitely feeling his knee. He was gripping my hands so tightly, and leaning heavily on me. But he just kept smiling at me, and the look in his eyes told me everything I needed to know. Plus, I knew if he needed to stop, he'd say something. I said my vows, them Hubby said his. Mine were flawless. His, not so much. He flubbed the first line! But he persevered, and got through them. The exchanging of the rings went beautifully. The kiss... Perfection.

Once the reception began, and we had cut the cake, Hubby collapsed into a chair with a sigh of relief. The rest was kind of a blur. I know we opened gifts and talked to people and ate, but I can't recall details.

Afterward, we went to dinner (we had an afternoon wedding and them went home to change and relax). We had a nice dinner and then went home.

All-in-all it was a wonderful day, despite the challenges we faced. Hubby and I have been married for  little over two years now, we have a beautiful daughter, and are more in love now than we were on our wedding day.

Enjoy life with faith, love, and joy!
